Asylum and Withholding of Removal
You may apply for asylum if you have a well-founded fear of persecution as a result of your political opinion, religious belief, nationality, race or membership in a particular social group. An application for asylum must be made within the first year you enter the United States. If you are granted asylum, you will be allowed to apply for your green card after one year.
Withholding of removal is like asylum except it will not allow you to apply for permanent residency, it only protects you from removal to the country you sought asylum from.
